When to use drop-frame
Drop-frame timecode is required for 29.97 fps NTSC broadcast and 59.94 fps HD broadcast. It skips two (or four) frame numbers at the start of every minute except every tenth to keep the timecode count aligned with real wall-clock time.
Cinema (23.976, 24), PAL (25, 50), and NTSC NDF (29.97 NDF, 59.94 NDF) all use non-drop-frame timecode. The ; separator always means drop-frame; : means non-drop-frame.
